A complete gel nail kit should include all the tools you need to apply gel nails immediately and to remove gel nails, while also providing aftercare for healthy nail beds.
Required products in gel nail kit:
UV or LED Lamps – Gel polish does involve a UV or LED lamp to commence the curing process. Gels are made up of oligomers which when placed under a UV light assist the initiators within the product to polymerise forming the hard-wearing artificial gel nail.
UV lamps need to be a 36-watt lamp (4 x 9-watt bulbs) to ensure nails cure at all points on the nail
Bulbs should be replaced every 6 months (they will not blow like a light bulb they just lose their strength) place a sticker on the bottom of your lamp with the date on it that needs to be changed.
Primer/bonder – A primer or bonder dehydrates the natural nail plate and acts like a double-sided sticky tape to help products adhere to the nail plate and should be applied before polish application.
A bonder is applied to the nail and may need to be cured under the lamp to help the Gel adhere to the nail. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.
Base coat gel/clear gel – Applied in a thin layer and cured under the lamp to form a base
Gel polish colour – comes in a range of colours, each layer must be cured for a minimum of 2 minutes under a UV lamp and between 30-40 seconds under an LED Lamp. Normally 2 thin layers are required to ensure even coverage.
Gel Topcoat – Applied in a thin layer to seal and cured under the lamp to finish the colour.
Finishing wipe/wipe off – This removes the sticky residue after the final layer of gel polish has been cured.
Removal – gel polish should be soaked off with pure acetone to prevent damage and overfilling to the natural nail, finish removing residual gel with a white block only.
Aftercare nail products:
Cuticle and nail oil – Should be used daily to condition the matrix and encourage nail growth.
Gloves – Should be worn when cleaning, gardening, decorating and washing up.
Hand cream – Should be used daily to prevent lifting and rehydrate the skin.
